Persona 5 launched in Japan last week on September 15, 2016, and sales tracker Media Create indicates that 337,767 copies of the game were sold during its first week (tracked from September 12 to September 18), topping the sales charts.

This makes Persona 5 the fastest selling Persona game in the 20 years since the series debuted.

Famitsu sales tracker indicates that the sell-through rate for the PS4 version of the game was between 80% and 100%. The same rate for the PS3 version was between 60% and 80%.

yet yokai watch and pokemon will break 2 million, sadly this is the pinnacle of console gaming in Japan…

Still congratulations to Atlus and Sega, also its nice to finally see the transition over to PS4 by the Japanese gamer.

    • Bruno Martins

      You mean casual games?

      • Corey Holcomb

no I meant while comparing the sales of a console game like persona with the aforementioned titles

        • Bruno Martins

I know mate. I meant that Pokemon and Yokai Watch sells way more because of the more casual style of gameplay, its innocent and anyone can play them

          • Corey Holcomb

then what about monster hunter? personally I think while the casual nature of the games contributed to their success it is also the fact that the Japanese are a lot more intimate with their handhelds than home consoles.

          • I agree that handheld games are sold better than console ones.

  • ChocoBar

FYI this is only three days worth of sales.

  • HvnlyDaze

    Woo!

  • Persona 5 was worth the wait.

  • Lord Shiru

Well done Atlus, you deserve it !

  • I’m actually really surprised that the PS4 version has sold more than PS3. That’s pretty shocking.

Good to see that Japanese RPG gamers know when they have a good thing.

Glad to see the early numbers and thankfully Sony/Atlus’ marketing push for the game has paid off.

Now i don’t expect it to do such grand numbers abroad but with the series reputation ever building it can only continue to increase i hope. Perhaps by Persona 6 we’ll have a new king of JRPGs on our hands (I somehow feel that FF gets to maintain that title though and i know for the Japanese themselves its dragon quest all the way). Still, its nice to have option.

N.B I noticed Persona 5 has shifted note units in 3 days than Tales of Berseria has in 31 (an entire month then). I’ve become a fan of both series but perhaps this is hinting at not only Tales of fan but the Japanese playerbase wanting more from Tales of. Perhaps its time for a PS4 exclusive Tales of game Namco Bandai? (hint hint).

I hope with a worldwide release coming up that it’ll break the 1 million mark in it’s lifetime. This game deserves it.

  • It is good to hear that my beloved series are getting more love. I hope this will set the trend for the returning of J-RPG glory days.
