Persona 5 Developer Messages Celebrating 10 Million Copies Sold

Since its original release in 2016, the Persona 5 series has won numerous game awards and has received critical acclaim, reaching 10 million units sold as of December 2023.

To celebrate the sales milestone, messages of thanks have been shared from developers behind each of the major Persona 5 releases: Persona 5, the expanded release Persona 5 Royal, the rhythm game spin-off Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight, the action RPG spin-off Persona 5 Strikers and the newly released strategy RPG Persona 5 Tactica.

It’s been quite a while since Persona 5 was released, but thanks to the many players picking up the game, we’ve received lots of feedback and support.

Since then, many spin-offs of Persona 5 have been created, and combined with those related games, a total of 10 million copies sold has been achieved! As a creator I am happy that Persona 5 has led to content that everyone will be able to enjoy for a long time.

When I think back to the game’s development, I never expected an outcome like this. Between the story and the game design, we worked on building on what we had learned from work on Persona 3 and Persona 4. At the time we focused on completing the game so that it could be released as a 20th anniversary project for the Persona brand. I remember that we somehow managed to complete it, thinking back to those challenging times.

That is why I was so happy that RPG fans around the world were able to enjoy it. Many of the responses we received were so positive about the aspects that we put so much care into crafting. It was very encouraging and served as great motivation. I think the game was truly blessed with good fortune. Thank you everyone.

…That said, it has been quite a while since Persona 5 was released, and I think that people are looking forward to new developments from Atlus and the Persona series. Personally, I am currently working on a new title that is separate from Persona and focusing on creating content that will mark the 35th anniversary of the Atlus brand. Nevertheless, the Persona series is still being developed by a highly motivated development team.

No matter what title we create, we will continue to focus on an originality that is uniquely ours, keeping in mind our original intentions while also looking at what we have received from our players and what we hope to receive in the future.

Thank you for your continued support.

Looking back, the development of Persona 5 Royal was really challenging. At that time, I halted all my other tasks and focused all my resources on the development of Persona 5 Royal. In the battle of game development there is no right answer, and our team struggled to the limit and searched for our own justice. Fortunately, Persona 5 Royal was completed and fortunately received high praise from users all over the world. It was truly a happy outcome.

That Persona 5 related titles have now sold 10 million copies is a deeply appreciated record for myself and the development team. It serves as a powerful motivation, and we’re using our thoughts and experiences from that time as a driving force to move forward even stronger towards new challenges. I would like to express my gratitude to all users and everyone involved.

It’s been five years since the release of Persona 5 Royal and it’s been eight years since Persona 5 was released. I’m really happy that it has been enjoyed by users of various generations for so long. I would like to use this as a source of inspiration to encourage myself to create works that everyone can enjoy, so I look forward to your continued support.

A belated Happy New Year to everyone! Thanks to your support, the Persona 5 series has achieved the remarkable milestone of selling over 10 million copies. I am truly grateful to each and every one of you. Thank you very much.

Persona 5 Strikers was the first collaboration between Koei Tecmo Games and Atlus, and the first action RPG in the series. While there were pressures involved, it was a title filled with creativity and challenges.

The title “Scramble” (from the Japanese title Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers) was intended to represent the combining of creative forces from both companies. It truly was a collaborative effort, combining the strengths of ω-Force and P-Studio, sharing ideas, and working together to bring the project to completion. I am incredibly pleased that this collaboration contributed to the success we see today. I’ve even come across delightful comments like “I want to meet Sophia and Zenkichi again.” I’m genuinely happy to have been involved in this title.

Moving forward, I believe that the Persona series will continue to create new stories, mixing both fantasy and reality, like a room that exists somewhere between dreams and reality.

I would be happy if you would continue to follow the Persona series in the future. Once again, thank you very much.

Persona 5 Tactica was just released on November 17, 2023. Even so, I’m genuinely happy that I was able to contribute to the Persona 5 series selling over 10 million copies. There’s no doubt that this is thanks to everyone’s support. Thank you very much.

This is the first work in the Persona series in the SRPG genre,. The idea came from the cover mechanic in Persona 5 where you hide in the shadows. I believe that the reason the Phantom Thieves of Heart have been able to develop in so many ways, transcending genres, is because of the charm and potential of the original game.

As with any title, when you take on a new challenge you will feel an equal mix of anticipation and anxiety. I would like to express my respect and gratitude to the development staff and business staff who tirelessly followed this uncharted path, and I hope that this path continues to connect with new Persona fans who have yet to experience it.
