Persona 5 Delayed to April 4, 2017 in North America and Europe, Free Dual Audio at Launch, Playable at PlayStation Experience 2016

A delay for the Western release of Persona 5 has been announced during the “Let Us Start the Game” livestream event, for the sake of not compromising on the localization quality of the game.

The new release date for the game will be April 4, 2017 in North America  and Europe, delayed from its previous release date of February 14, 2017.

To refine the English script, the game has been delayed. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the English version will contain free dual audio for the Japanese language as well.

Finally, a playable build of Persona 5 will be available at the PlayStation Experience on December 3 and 4.

Delay Statement

I know, I know. It stings. But Persona 5 set the gold standard for Atlus with its launch in Japan, and we wanted to put the utmost care into ensuring it winds up the best when it launches in the west. And — and this is a very special “and” — we have some exceedingly good news for you in light of this delay:

Persona 5 will have dual audio. For PS4 and PS3.

Dual Audio Statement

We’re including it as DLC for logistical reasons, but it will be free, for forever. People have been asking for this since P5 was announced, and through herculean effort from just about every division of Atlus, we managed to arrange this. This was something we especially wanted to do for the Atlus Faithful, the ones who still appreciate our English dubs and respect all the effort we put into localizing. You all are the reason we get to do the jobs we do, so we’ve been fighting for this for a long while, and we are glad we can make this happen for all of those who support us and love our games.

PlayStation Experience

For those of you who are planning to attend PlayStation Experience in Anaheim this year, Atlus will be there. Along with a playable demo of Persona 5. If you’re going to be at PS Experience, we hope to see you there! Oh, and not that you needed any more reason to visit our booth, but there’s also going to be a Persona 5 collector’s card as well!

Persona 5 was released for the PS3 and PS4 in Japan on September 15, 2016. It will release in North America and Europe on April 4, 2017, and in traditional Chinese and Korean in 2017.

OMG! I dont even matter if the game has been delayed. Full Japanese voice when I have it!

  • This additional delay is so beyond acceptable that I’m at a loss of words. This game should have been day and date with Japan, and instead we’re waiting over half a year for this shit.

It is unbelievable how little Atlus Japan gives a fuck about the west. People should show that support back by never buying an Atlus product again.

And not having another game translated ever again? Yes, that’s a smart move. They must have a good reason for it.

      • Yes, it’s called “the west? lol, well we’ll worry about that when the game is 100% done in Japan instead of planning for a worldwide release like we should based on how popular this game is here”.

They might have an abbreviation for it, but I missed that memo.

While i am personally extremely happy that we are getting dual audio and while I’ll be laughing my ass off at the dub-fans crying on all the online-forums I do agree that this is really bad of Atlus JP, I don’t think this is Atlus USA’s fault at all. I remember at this years E3 when they were interviewing the guys from Atlus USA and it was obvious that they didn’t really know much more about the game than the rest of the fans. They probably didn’t even get the game so they could start localizing until maybe a month before launch.

      • You’re right, they probably never saw the game until it was out for retail in Japan, which makes me even more upset with Atlus Japan. That is so unprofessional and shows so much bare disdain for any market that isn’t Japan.

        • Crispian11

haha like that interview with the lead producer of Persona 5 when he was asked if he had a message for western fans and all he had to say was basically “buy our game”.

        • Metalsnakezero

When it comes down to it Atlus is still a small studio. It why half million in sale is profitable to them.

    • the7Saviors

I’m pissed about the delay but i’m not gonna so far as to not buy another atlus title…

Given that this is over of the longer Persona games, given tbh amount of dialogue/text that needs to be translated it might be a little more understandable.

I get that better planning would mean this could start earlier (i.e as the game is bent worked on they translate the menus, place names, items, etc.) However if that’s not finalised by Atlus and they have to wait until the game goes gold, well that’s when they can get underway properly with it.

so happy with the delay; Jan and Feb are so packed with awesome games.

This too. My wallet is happy for the breather

  • KrazyBean

That’s actually pretty good timing IMO. FFXV in November then Horizon Zero Dawn in February then Persona 5 in April. I’m fine with that. Breathing space for 3 big RPGs.

    • Patrick Honeyman

That and For Honour are both out at the same time. Releasing an RPG that requires a lot of the player’s time then is a big risk.

I can’t think of anything major coming out at the start of April ’17 so it makes sense.

Not gonna lie: this makes me much, much angrier than it has any right to. I’m actually physically livid. I’m sick of game delays in general, but I’m especially sick of this game getting delayed in particular.

I couldn’t give a fuck about the Japanese audio track. If Atlus wants to make it up to the fans, release the PlayStation Experience demo for download on PSN after the event. That will more than satisfy.

    • the7Saviors

      So much this.

    • crashtestash

“If Atlus wants to make it up to the fans, release the PlayStation Experience demo for download on PSN after the event”

Atlus fucking hire this man!! I would love a demo!

  • MusouTensei

Finally, I love how more and more publishers realise that people want dual audio, NINTENDO!!! (because Xenoblade X).
You messed up royaly with your terrible Tokyo Mirage Sessions localization but I will give you one last chance with this game, but I will watch you closely.

  • Christina_Puck

Curse you weaboos! Now who am I gonna spend Valentine’s Day with!? Jk, I am so gonna download that dual audio…

  • Vallen

    More time for FF XV~
This better be a damn polished product when it comes out

  • DimariaXV

    Winter 2014, I´m ready

  • Grant Shealy

Why not go ahead and delay it to 2018 so we can have an extra font for the menus?

  • globspeed

Personally, I feel the game has become even better now that there’s dual audio, and I’m one of the folks who is just fine with only English dub in the game.

  • JuanK

Be careful if you plan to check these news on Atlus twitter. Bunch of morons spoiling game endings withouth warning.

  • And so the weebs rejoice. >:P

  • Tōma Haku

i already have the Japanese version, i play it, and i love it!!
but i definitely will buy Western version too as thanks to Atlus for their effort to bring Japanese audio into localization!! :^)

    • Patrick Honeyman

I got an Asian copy that has everything on Japanese. Think I’m about halfway and although the game is long I’m enjoying it quite a bit.

If once I’ve finished it I feel it was a worthwhile experience, I’ll buy it again as it’ll be nice to have the Japanese with English subs.

Although this is annoying for those who expected it on Feb. 14th, those seven weeks aren’t that much if dual audio will be available. Perhaps they looked at Tales of Berseria and thought if they’re offering it, we need to as well.

In any case by April (no joke) everyone will get to play Persona 5!

  • James Li

    Fuck Yeah! Dual Audio!

  • Wow… As I glance through the comments, I can understand why fans are being agitated over the delay (which I was expecting), because I also felt hopeless even though it was expected. But now that I’m reading the article again, I’ve realized that I’ve missed the part with the addition of dual audio. This I must say, it is very impressive. It is what some people actually anticipate but definitely not what many of us have been expecting for ATLUS to grant our wish.

I have the downloadable copy and physical copy of the Japanese version, which I have no regret at all. The game is way beyond my expectation, which was extremely high I would say, for someone who has had no previous interaction with any Persona work.

And of course being a huge fan of P5 way, way before, when the game was announced long time ago, I immediately preordered the Take your heart Edition. I was disappointed with the delay too. I was a little angry with the delay too. Then again… if only people could realize the things that the staffs may have been going through, they wouldn’t be so angry over a delay. Maybe it’s not that they don’t care about the West? Who knows. If only people are willing to go even further for the things they love, perhaps picking up a new language at own’s pace will alleviate things. These things take time, but one day, surely one will be able to get first hand experience even if the localization isn’t granted or happening on the same date as the original release. No harm learning it since there are so many perks of being able to read, speak and understand if you are into Japanese animation and culture.

I may be wrong about some things because I am not familiar with ATLUS and their pattern… so please pardon me.

Maybe it’s not making sense to some but… my point is… why not do something about what can be done now for the future instead of blaming others?

  • Lucky Cross

    Dual-Audio, you say?! O_O
