Agrat bat Mahlat Designer’s Commentary

Atlus SEA has released a translation of character designer Masayuki Doi’s commentary on Agrat bat Mahlat’s design.

Today, we’ll be looking at Agrat bat Mahlat, the last member of the Qatistu. In the Zohar, she is Samael’s third companion, following his unions with Lilith and Naamah.

She is said to be a Which-Queen who taught the secrets of magic to the Babylonian sage Amemar. She is also known as “the demon who dances on the roof,” as she is said to wander the air with a horde of messengers of destruction. However in SMTVV, my goal was to focus on her reputation as the queen of witches.

I incorporated features classically associated with witches: a pointy hat and long, black robes. I then added my own original elements, giving her skeletal limbs to emphasize her demonic traits and a body similar to that of a ball-jointed doll; doesn’t she seem otherworldly? As a matter of fact, Agrat is said to be the daughter of Lilith, so I planned to make her look younger than the other members of the Qatistu. This deliberate contrast imbued her with a slightly unsettling quality.

She wields a parasol, which she uses as a magical instrument. Taking inspiration from several ancient monarchies, where parasols were carried by royalty, I had hoped this aspect of her design would give her a regal aura. Overall, I feel I succeeded in capturing Agrat’s elegance and grace.

I must sound like a broken record by now, but once again, I tried to incorporate a delicate balance between beauty and hideousness in all the designs of the Qadistu. They’re unified by a similar black-and-white color scheme and identical sets of wings. Collectively, they give off quite a formidable impression, wouldn’t you agree? This wraps up my introduction of each member of the Qadistu. Keep an eye out for my next posts, where I’ll be introducing other demons who’ll shape the events of the story.
