Naamah Designer’s Commentary
Atlus SEA has released a translation of character designer Masayuki Doi’s commentary on Naamah’s design.
Today, we’ll be looking at Naamah, a member of the Qadistu. In the Zohar, she is notorious as the queen of demons and as the wife of the fallen angel Samael.
The several legends about her are truly wicked. She corrupted Shemyaza and Azazel, fallen angels who have appeared in previous Shin Megami Tensei games.
Alongside Lilith, she seduced Adam after his separation from Eve, and gave birth to a spawn of demonic children. With the tales that she gave birth to the powerful demon Asmodeus from her union with an angel, she is fit to be called the queen of demons. She may have been an alluring beauty who could tempt all: humans, angels and demons. The king of demons was said to pursue her every night.
However, virtually no descriptions of her appearance exist, so I didn’t have a basis to work off of. In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Naamah was given an original design inspired by these legends.
When designing characters, I always want each aspect of the design to speak for itself, so in Naamah’s case, I focused on giving her many traits that emphasized her seductiveness. What traits, you ask? Well, you’d have to be a real devil to know, haha. I wanted her demonic traits to induce truly unholy feelings, so I incorporated a visible skill and exaggerated human body features into her design, which fit nicely into the theme that members of the Qadistu balance the extremes of beauty and ugliness.
The same team behind the original SMTV will be handling the other artistic aspects of her portrayal, link her in-game model, animations and visual effects, with these elements in mind. Her character model and unique skills really make me appreciate the level of quality put into each demon, so I hope you’re looking forward to seeing Naamah in the game!
